KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah asserted the presence of the paramilitary force, Rangers, in the province, particularly Karachi, saying they will leave when police are efficient to handle law and order situation.

In a discussion with journalist—who called on him at CM House—Murad said the government has raised the salaries of the police force, adding that the recruitment is now done purely on merit.

“Our police stand at a moral high ground, along with latest weapons, vehicles and other gadgets,” said Shah.

He elaborated the security situation of the city, saying the Afghan war was a turning point in the peaceful history of the country, as the war brought heaps of weapons in the Pakistan, particularly in Karachi.

“The criminal elements emerged because weapons were easily available and then they managed to enter the political system,” he said, adding this trend caused serious damage to politics apart from the destruction of a peaceful culture of the country.

The chief minister said that the different police operations were launched against the criminals in the city, but the criminals had patronage and they killed each and every policeman in a target killing, who had participated in the operation.

“In this way, more than 150 policemen were killed by the criminals in the city and this killing badly hurt the morale of the police,” said Murad while adding that PPP inherited the worst law and order situation when it came to power.

“We tried to purge the politics of criminal elements but things went from bad to worse and ultimately a targeted operation was launched in which law enforcement agencies achieved the desired results,” he concluded.
