LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab President Qamar Zaman Kaira on Thursday said that the state machinery is being utilised to protect the Sharif family.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Kaira questioned as to why former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was not appearing before the accountability court, adding that the ousted premier was heading towards a dangerous path as he was indulged in the confrontation with state institutions.

The senior PPP leader said that the corruption records of those who were raising the slogan of transparency are now coming into the open, alleging that the companies formed by the rulers are exempted from an audit.

Kairi made it clear that the PPP would not allow the privatisation of public sector enterprises, including Pakistan Steel Mills.

Kaira also criticised the government for a downward spiral in country’s economy.

Taking a jibe at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, he said that politicians like Khan give bad repute to politicians, referring to ongoing cases against the PTI chief.

Criticising country’s foreign policy, he said that because of the poor policies, regional and international powers are hurling threats at Pakistan.
