KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar has said that it was a challenge to remove the backlog of garbage in Karachi which they were prepared to face at any cost.
He was addressing a meeting in Gulberg Town Office in connection with the cleanliness campaign presently underway in central Karachi. Akhtar urged all those officers who did not want to work to surrender their services. He warned officers who had received commission or money from sweepers for giving them relief and said that such officers would be relieved if they did so again.
The city is facing lots of problems but we have to resolve them despite our limited resources, he said. He also urged the officers not to feel any pressure while performing their duty and play their role in the cleanliness drive. He said that all chairmen and vice chairmen, would from today, be on ground along with concerned officers and staff to monitor the works. He also directed that fumigation and tree plantation should also be carried out with cleaning of garbage and waste.
The chairmen of different union councils on this occasion informed the mayor about their problems and gave details on the ongoing development activities in their area. To this, the Karachi mayor urged them to carry on with their duty so that the city could be made clean and green.
The meeting was also attended by the MNA Shaikh Salahuddin, Abdul Wasim, MPA Jamal Ahmed, Azeem Faruqui and Wasim Qureishi along with the Land Committee of City Council Chairman Syed Arshad Hasan, DMC Central Chairman Rehan Hashmi, Vice Chairman Shakir Ali, head of departments of KMC and DMC Central and other officers.
