ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has approached the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Friday urging it to inspect the accounts of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to determine the parties’ sources of funding.
The application was filed by PTI’s Farrukh Habib with the ECP, requesting the electoral body to examine financial records of both parties to check whether the said parties had been financed through illegal sources.
Habib in his plea stated that the PML-N and PPP had collected funds from foreign countries, prohibited under the election laws, and had not disclosed the sources of the collected funds in their nomination papers.
Habib further claimed that there were inconsistencies in the financial accounts of both the parties calling upon the commission to scrutinise them. He pleaded with the ECP to act against these parties for receiving foreign funds.
Earlier in the week, the ECP had decided to examine the financial records submitted by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Hearing a petition filed by one of the PTI founding members, Akbar S. Babar, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan had stated that the commission will thoroughly assess the financial details of PTI but will not share details until the matter is pending with the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
“The commission will not share details in connection of party funding records until the matter is in the high court,” the CEC ruled.
PTI founding member Akbar S. Babar’s had filed a petition in the ECP seeking the disqualification of PTI Chairman Imran Khan for allegedly obtaining funds from illegal sources and discrepancies in the party’s accounts.
