ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) Director General (DG) Muhammad Khalid Siddiq said on Tuesday that the main purpose of the authority is not to create problems for the business community but to ensure compliance of standards and quality.

Siddiq said this while visiting the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) to listen to the issues being faced by the retailers in the aftermath of raids conducted by the PSQCA, and agreed to form committees to address the issues being faced by the business community.

He said that the Supreme Court of Pakistan had instructed the PSQCA to make the federal capital a model city in connection with maintaining standards and quality of products, while adding that the business community should cooperate with the authority to achieve these objectives.

The DG further said that the business community should form a foolproof mechanism to ensure sale of licensed products only, that would also help the PSQCA in achieving its goals. Sale of substandard products had never worked to the benefit of manufacturers, retailers and consumers due to which the business community should discourage supply of such products, he added.

Moreover, Siddiq said that the PSQCA had developed a mobile phone application providing a list of licensed products that could be also be downloaded by consumers.

Later, a decision was made to form two committees, comprising of representatives from the authority and the business community. It was agreed that one committee would work with manufacturers and the other one with retailers to ensure availability of licensed products at retail outlets. The meeting also decided to hold awareness seminars to educate the business community about the importance of maintaining standards and quality in regard to consumer products.
