MEXICO CITY: Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and Member of National Assembly (MNA) Marvi Memon said that the BISP’s integrated social information system ensures maximum productivity, avoids duplicity of benefits and stops wastage of public money by enabling all layers of government to coordinate their responses.
She expressed her views during her keynote address at the inaugural session of the international seminar on social information systems in Mexico City, Mexico on Friday.
Talking about the best practices from Pakistan, Memon said that BISP’s national socio-economic registry (NSER) effectively integrated the social information system and replaced all other fragmented targeting mechanisms across the country.
Transparent selection methods, innovative technology and a comprehensive package of services, as well as an effective design and implementation of the programme, have made BISP one of the pioneers of integrated social information systems of the world.
She further added that the invitation extended to Pakistan as the only Asian country to participate in the seminar comprising Latin American countries demonstrated that BISP was recognised as an international best practice.
The minister of state also visited a community kitchen for earthquake victims in Mexico, where she met Prospera (social safety net of Mexico) beneficiaries.
She assured them of support from Pakistan and told them that Pakistan would be sharing prototypes of Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) with Mexico for effective disaster management.
The three-day seminar was jointly organized by Mexico’s Ministry of Social Development, Social Development Committee of the Senate, Social Development Committee of the House of Representatives and the World Bank.
The seminar was intended to seek international assistance in the development of regulatory mechanisms of Mexico’s Ministry of Social Development and the institutionalisation of its strategic planning and targeting instrument at the national level.
Lawmakers and international experts from Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Chile, Mexico, the World Bank and Pakistan were invited to attend the seminar.
