The Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered the provincial government on Wednesday to appoint 100 female and four male doctors on contract basis in the Population Welfare Department (PWD) and if the government fails to hire their services, their salaries would start from May 26.
The SHC division bench including Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Shahid Anwar Bajwa issued the orders on a contempt-of-court petition filed by Dr Irfana Tahseen and others.
Earlier, the SHC, on a constitutional petition, had ruled that the Sindh government should appoint the doctors in the PWD, but the government instead, filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the SHC’s order.
On Wednesday, the petitioners’ counsel stated that despite the Sindh government filing an appeal, neither any notice was issued by the apex court, nor it had suspended the high court’s decision. Therefore, the Sindh government is now bound to obey the SHC’s order, he added.
The applicants had cited the Sindh chief secretary and the secretaries of Population and Services departments as respondents.
The doctors had passed the Sindh Public Service Commission written and oral examination for the intended posts, but the provincial government was reluctant to appoint them.
