KARACHI: A large number of students gathered outside the Aisha Bawany Government College on Monday when the trust officials refused to open the institute, defying court orders.

The Sindh High Court on Saturday ordered the reopening of the institute suspending lower court orders that had directed that the institute should be sealed in accordance with the trust’s plea.

The institute’s director could not produce a copy of the court orders that directed the reopening of the institute. Consequently, officials of the trust and the education department got engaged in a brawl.

Sindh Education Minister Jam Mehtab Dahar is reported to have said that he will have the college reopened within an hour as per court orders and will also engage police authorities in case the trust fails to open the institute.

On Monday morning, college students attempted to block Shahrah-e-Faisal in protest of the closure of the institution but their protest was limited to the college gate after the intervention from the police authorities. Following this, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered the immediate reopening of the institute keeping in view the student’s educational needs.

Meanwhile, the trustees have gotten the school gate welded from the inside and the institution remains closed even after the provincial government’s intervention.

Later, advocate general Sindh addressed a letter to the chief secretary and IG, stating that the institute must be reopened in compliance with the state orders.

Aisha Bawany Government College allegedly owned by the trust wishes to restrict educational activities at the institute and plans to use the land for commercial purposes. In this regard, the government officials approached a lower court to be granted a stay on educational activities.

Subsequently, the college administration approached the high court to prevent one of the city’s oldest institutes from closing down.
