ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday submitted the details of party funding to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the foreign funding case.

The case was heard by a five-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (r) Sardar Raza Khan in Islamabad.

The documents were submitted by PTI counsel Saqlain Haider who also requested the ECP to give a confirmation receipt to the party for the submission of documents.

The chief election commissioner, however, refused to provide any such receipt, mentioning that the party was bound by law to submit these documents.

PTI lawyer Faisal Chaudhry requested the ECP to keep the documents in safe custody so that they’re not accidentally leaked to anyone else.

The Commission will resume hearing of the case on the 16th of next month.

The ECP had last week directed PTI to submit complete account details until September 18 in the case, warning that failure to do so would force the ECP to take as fact the petitions submitted against the party.

In 2014, Babar filed a petition in the ECP seeking the disqualification of Imran Khan for allegedly obtaining funds from illegal sources and discrepancies in the party’s accounts.

He also claimed that funds worth $3 million were collected by the PTI chief, transferred from illegal channels from the Middle East to bank accounts of PTI members.

Earlier, the ECP had also issued bailable arrest warrants for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan for failing to show up for the contempt of court proceeding against him.

The ECP had last month issued a second show-cause notice to Imran Khan after he failed to reply to the earlier notice regarding the contempt of court proceedings against him.

Imran Khan had initially challenged the maintainability of the contempt petition and raised objections over ECP’s jurisdiction to initiate contempt proceedings against him. However, the ECP declared on August 10 that it had the legal right to hear the contempt case. It then issued a formal show-cause notice to the PTI chairman, asking him to submit a reply by Aug 23.

Imran Khan had accused the ECP of being biased in the foreign funding case following which his lawyer had tendered an apology with the commission. However, the PTI chairman in a TV interview later said that his counsel had tendered an apology in his personal capacity and that he had not apologised.
