Islami Jamiat-e-Talba (IJT) and Insaf Students Federation (ISF) clashed in the University of Education (UoE) on Monday. More than five students of ISF were injured in a scuffle, which took place during ISF’s membership campaign in UoE’s Township campus. The police have arrested about half a dozen IJT activists. According to ISF officials, more than ten ISF officials were injured and six IJT activists were arrested after the IJT activists attacked the membership camp of ISF and threatened them to close the camp.
IJT Nazim Fazlur Rehman, Ali Raza and Mudassar Ali along with a dozen of other students attacked the camp around 1:00 pm and injured ISF members including Gulrez Iqbal, Amir Iqbal, Sabihul-Hasan and Faisal, which were shifted to the Jinnah Hospital, ISF claimed. ISF President Farrukh Habib and PTI leaders have condemned the attack. The police claimed that they have taken five IJT activists into custody but have not registered an FIR against them. IJT Nazim Akhter Nazir told Pakistan Today that the ISF students of UoE wanted their restoration in the varsity and therefore wanted to block roads to protest.
He said that ISF has been using arms for the last several days in the varsity’s hostel. He said they threw bottles on IJT students on Monday in which 25 students were injured. Nazir criticized the police for keeping IJT activists in its custody without the registration of an FIR and alleged that the police favoured ISF. He also claimed that the police was also not allowing the medical treatment of injured IJT students. UoE protests came into limelight when the students started a campaign against the termination of their teachers, Dr Pasha and his wife, a few months ago. Students also faced torture of police and termination from the varsity while campaigning for their teachers.
