Refuse-derived fuel plant being installed in Faisalabad

On the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plant is being set up in Fisalabad under the patronage of the city district government. The new mechanism of scientific disposal of municipal solid waste will not only dispose of the waste in a better way but also help in generating the income of the city district government and save the foreign exchange.
This was stated by District Coordination Officer (DCO) Naseem Sadiq while presiding over a pre-bid conference held here at his office to discuss the modalities of the project. The conference was attended by the infrastructure project development facility (Ministry of Finance) chief executive officer, Adil Anwar, transaction advisers, Punjab Urban Unit, Dr Farrukh, Rana Nadim, Ms Sadiq, Senior Legal Adviser Asim Rauf, Parks and Horticulture Authority MD Ashiq Dogar, Municipal Services EDO Ch Liaqat, representatives of pre-qualified firms, DG Cement, Maple Leaf, Habib Rafiq and others.
The DCO said the RDF plant would be established on “design, build, finance and operate basis” under public-private partnership which would be the first ever model project in Pakistan for recycling solid waste. He said the CDGF would sell solid waste to the successful bidding firm for transforming it into fuel which was being used in cement industry. He said administrative support would be provided by the CDGF to the firms concerned for running the RDF plant successfully. During the conference, the participants were briefed on the solid waste management system of CDGF. It was revealed that urban population of the city area of Faisalabad was 2.51 million and 1,206 tons solid waste was being generated daily against the capacity of collecting 651 tons. He said a delegation of senior officers of the district city government had recently visited Singapore to negotiate with the Singaporean authorities for the installation of a solid waste treatment plant in Faisalabad. The delegation met a number of Singapore government and corporate officials. They also inspected several solid waste treatment plants and studied various aspects of their functioning and implications, the DCO stated.
It is learnt the city government officials are expected to sign an agreement with a Singaporean company for the installation of the plant to dispose of tons of the waste produced by the industrial city on daily basis. The plant that will be installed at Jarranwala Road will recycle the waste into usable items or material. The most significant feature of the plant is that heaps of the rubbish piled at various locations of the city will be removed. Apart from giving a cleaner look to the city, it will help reduce the incidence of diseases like hepatitis. The government which is spending millions of rupees on disposing of the rubbish will earn money from this project for as per the proposed agreement the Singaporean company will buy the waste from the city government to run their recycling process.
FOUR-YEAR-OLD GIRL RAPED: A delinquent youth picked up a four-year-girl who was playing outside her house and raped her in a nearby building.
The accused was arrested by the residents who handed him over to police after a severe beating. Layeba daughter of Muhammd Afzal was playing outside her house in D-Type Colony when Sajid Ali of the same area lured her to a nearby building where he raped the girl. The neighbours come to her rescue on hearing her screams. They thrashed the accused and handed him over to the police. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.
CONSUMER COURT PUNISHES SECURITY COMPANY: Faisalabad Consumer Court Judge Ejaz Ahmed Buttar held a car safety company responsible for its inability to trace the stolen car and directed it to provide a car of the same value to its client. Abdullah Shah of Muslim Town moved the court for relief after his car installed with tracking system was stolen while the company failed to track down the car. The judge also fined the tracking company Rs 25,000.
