Suspects held during raids in different areas

KARACHI: A transgender person was gunned down in a drive-by shooting incident in Karachi late on Tuesday.

According to details, Chanda was shot dead in Defence’s Shahbaz Commercial area when unidentified men riding a car with tinted glasses opened fire on a number of transgender people standing in the street. One of the fellows of the deceased transgender said that the motorists first threw eggs on them and drove away.

“The suspects then returned after a while and opened fire on us. We ran from there but Chanda was hit by bullets,” the source said, adding that the transgender lived in Orangi.

Police officials recovered shell casings of 9mm pistol from the crime scene and a murder case has been registered against unknown people.

Meanwhile, police rounded up 28 suspects in raids conducted in Mobina Town, Surjani Town, Pakistan Bazar, Baldia Town and Korangi areas. Seven suspects were arrested in Surjani Town and over 50 sacks of Gutka were seized from them, Orangi SP Abid Ali Baloch said.

Seven suspected robbers, including a woman, were apprehended in Mominabad area. The suspects were said to be associated with a 24-member gang, which also has six women members.

The arrested suspects have reportedly confessed to their involvement in over 100 robberies.

Separately, Malir SSP Rao Anwar told reporters that his force had conducted a raid on a gambling den in Mobina Town’s Quaid-e-Azam Colony leading to the arrest of 11 gamblers. Police also seized money put on a stake and some other articles used for placing bets from the arrested gamblers.

An alleged encounter took place between duty cops and street criminals busy looting citizens in Nazimabad No 3 area which resulted in the arrest of an injured suspect. A 40-year-old woman was also wounded during the exchange of gunfire between both sides.

Police also held an absconder Abdul Qadir from Baldia Town while another suspect Fahim, alias Shooter, was nabbed in Korangi. The law enforcers claimed to have seized drugs and weapons from the suspect.

In another incident, a 55-year-old man named Sabozai was shot dead by his relative Punhal at Super Highway cattle market. The incident was said to be an outcome of personal enmity.
