Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah while talking to media said on Tuesday that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) wanted to eliminate the articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution while passing the 18th Amendment during their tenure in government but Nawaz Sharif considered it a conspiracy. He claimed that Nawaz Sharif wanted to use the articles to oust then President Asif Ali Zardari and now he had become a victim of his own plot.
He further added that b taking out the rally on GT road and by defaming Supreme Court judges he was reflecting on the things he had already done in his previous terms.
He recommended that the removal or amendment of articles 62 and 63 should be taken up by a new assembly with a new mandate.
The Supreme Court disqualified Sharif as the prime minister on July 28 under Article 62 (1) (f) of the Constitution over his failure to disclose un-withdrawn receivables constituting assets from a UAE-based company.
It stated that he was not ‘honest’ and ‘truthful’, as per the country’s Constitution.
On August 8, the new prime minister, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, hinted at bringing an amendment in Article 62-1(f) of the Constitution, which requires a public representative to be “Sadiq and Ameen” (truthful and honest).
Bilawal also agreed to Khurshid Shah’s claims Nawaz wanted to use Article 62, 63 against opponents.
Earlier, during a rally in Chitral, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto said Nawaz wanted to use articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution against his political opponents which is why he opposed the PPP’s attempts to do away with the law.
“We had repeatedly said that the law was introduced by a dictator and is against the spirit of the Constitution but Nawaz Sharif did not budge. Now he himself had fallen prey to it,” Bilawal added.
Opposition parties including PML-Q, PTI and Jamaat-e-Islami have threatened the government of severe consequences if they tried to abolish the articles 62 and 63.
