Philip II Arena, Skopje: In a very well-anticipated game, Real opened the scoring when Casemiro – who earlier hit the bar – slid in a half volley.

By far the best player of the match, Isco, doubled the Champions League winners’  lead as he calmly slotted in from eight yards after a neat one-two with Gareth Bale, who started ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The turning point was when Gareth Bale struck the bar with a shot on the hour and Madrid ahead by two goals and threatening more. Bale had been selected to start, a move that goes some way to spiking the suggestion that the Welshman is surplus to requirements if another big signing comes in. Mourinho had said that Bale’s selection was a test of his status at Madrid and, as such, this will have reassured him.

United’s new £75m signing, Romelu Lukaku was on the score sheet as he tapped in before Marcus Rashford scuffed wide.

Mourinho’s men failed to threaten the Madrid goal trough out the game but could have had an equalizer through  half-time substitute Rashford with nine minutes left.

United were unable to create another clear-cut chance as Madrid became the first team to retain the Super Cup since 1990.
