MANCHESTER: South Africa were dismissed for 226 in reply to England’s first innings 362, a deficit of 136 runs, on the third day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday.
England took the one remaining Proteas wicket 3.4 overs into Sunday’s play when Duanne Olivier (four) top-edged a hook off Stuart Broad and was caught by wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow after South Africa had resumed on 220 for nine.
James Anderson took four wickets for 38 runs in 17 overs from the newly-named James Anderson End as England’s all-time leading wicket-taker recorded his best Test figures on his Lancashire home ground.
No South Africa batsman made a fifty in an innings where Temba Bavuma’s 46 was the top score.
Bairstow made 99 and put on 50 in just 55 balls for the tenth wicket with Anderson on Saturday before he was last man out, falling just short of what would have been his fourth Test century.
Later in the day, the Yorkshireman claimed his 100th dismissal as a Test wicket-keeper.
England lead this four-match series 2-1.
If they avoid defeat at Old Trafford, England will win their first home Test series against South Africa since 1998.
Such a result would also see Joe Root come out on top in his first Test series as England captain.
