Karachi police will get mobile tracking system

KARACHI: A special mobile tracking system will be provided to Karachi police to help them maintain law and order, a meeting attended by members of the National
Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior and Sindh police officials held at the Inspector General of Police (IGP)’s Office on Thursday decided. A detailed summary of the law and order situation in the city was given by Karachi CCPO Fayyaz Ahmed Leghari.
Similar announcements were made earlier but 101 police stations in the city are still without computers. The e-policing project was started in January 2008 with a total cost of Rs 941 million. The entire project is supposed to be completed by 2013 and the first phase to was to be finalized by December 2008.
Around 50 to 60 police stations were provided branded Pentium-IV computers and that was all that was done. The computers have been placed in storerooms. Sources revealed that the process to connect police stations with the central data centre will hardly take two months.
The five-year project included a police vehicle management system, GIS-based monitoring, surveillance system with recording on traffic sections, e-driving license system with violation management system (traffic management system, e-ticketing/e-challan, driving license issuance, inter connectivity of driving license branches, inter-connectivity of traffic sections), prisoner registration, record and movement system,
PRRMS video conferencing system between central prison and high court data centre and providing networking infrastructure, hardware and their connectivity at 500 locations in all over Sindh including all police stations and DPO and RPO offices.
The Sindh police website and emailing system has been upgraded and an FM police radio channel was launched recently which has stopped working already. The computerisation of police stations would help improve the performance of the police department in registering FIRs, investigations, resolution of public complaints immediately etc.
With the help of e-policing, the old manual work will be digitized The complaints and FIRs registered at various police stations would be uploaded to a databank, which could be accessed by officers like IGP, DIGs, RPS and SPOs etc.
