Singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey released her fifth album “Lust for Life” on 21st July. She released the album’s title track “Lust for Life”, featuring the Weekend, earlier this year in April. The first single, “Love” was released in February.

The album, which exhibits Del Rey at her freshest and finest, features collaborations with Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks as well as John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s son, Sean Ono Lennon. Each track is characterized by her signature breathy vocals and classic instrumentals. Perhaps the more unique tracks are the trap-infused collaborations with Playboy Carti and A$AP Rocky – Summer Bummer and Groupie Love. A$AP Rocky ad-libs over Lana’s stunning contralto as she coyly announces

“You can’t escape my affection/Wrap you up in my daisy chains”.

The album shares similarities with Del Rey’s previous work in terms of structure and sound however the content seems much more optimistic, brighter – she seems to be emerging from her darker days. In Get Free, her the final track, she says

“Finally, I’m crossing the threshold/From the ordinary world to the reveal of my heart”

indicating her move from a depressive state towards something better;

“Out of the black, into the blue” she croons.

The motifs in her album are also quite similar to previous album, “Honeymoon”, where she talks about beaches, the passage of time and nostalgia – however, the dynamics shift drastically from a grim mood towards reformative self-awareness. Even placing album art across the years one can see a contrast – “Born To Die”, where a wistful Lana peers into the camera to “Lust For Life”, where Lana Del Rey beams at her fans with daisies in her hair.

Lust for Life is available for streaming on major music-sharing platforms.
