An agreement has been reached between the opposition party members Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) Shah Mahmood Qureshi and the PPP’s Khursheed Shah to exert pressure on the National Assembly for the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, a day after the joint investigation team (JIT) report, investigating the Sharif family’s wealth, was finally released.

According to Shah Mahmood Qureshi Qureshi, a signed requisition to National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq will be submitted by both the parties, requesting him to call a session of Parliament.

He also said that the purpose of the requisition is to remind Nawaz Sharif of the promise he made to the country last year. Qureshi was referring to the PM speech following the Panama Papers leaks last year, in which the PM said that he “would resign without wasting a moment if any evidence was found against him in the Panama scandal investigation.”

It was revealed in the JIT investigation report that Nawaz Sharif and his family had amassed wealth well beyond their known sources of income. The said report consisting of 10 volumes has also stated that Hussain and Hassan Nawaz ─ the PM’s sons─ were used as proxies to accumulate family assets. The report also mentioned that ‘irregularly large amounts’ were transferred from the Sharif family’s companies in the UK, UAE and Saudi Arabia to the family in Pakistan, and the Pakistan-based companies.

The court has now adjourned the next hearing till July 17th.
