OTTAWA/TORONTO: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has extended his best wishes to Muslims in Canada and around the world on the festive occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

“Tonight at sunset, Muslims in Canada and around the world will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, also known as the festival of breaking of the fast,” said a statement by the popular world leader.

“Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the most important religious holidays for the Muslim community and marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramzan. It is a time to give thanks for the spiritual growth and the blessings received throughout the month.

“On this occasion, family and friends gather to attend special morning prayers, exchange greetings and gifts, share a celebratory meal, and give generously to others, especially those less fortunate.”

Trudeau said the cultural diversity in Canada is one of the greatest strengths and sources of pride. He said that as the country marks the 150th anniversary of confederation this year, it recognises the invaluable contributions the Muslim community makes to the national fabric.

“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I extend our best wishes to all those celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr,” he said.

He also posted a video on his Facebook page sharing Eid greetings and a glimpse of his and Canada’s loving and accepting nature during Ramzan.

Trudeau is also seen happily lending a helping hand at a Muslim Welfare Centre. “There is nothing more Canadian than helping your neighbour,” he said.

He also recalled his visit to an international charity organisation, Islamic Relief Canada, which is committed to alleviating poverty in over thirty different countries around the world.
