The funeral prayers of policemen, who were gunned down in the metropolis’s SITE area on Friday evening, were offered at the Police Headquarters Garden South here on Saturday.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Muhammad Yousuf and three constables-Shabbir, Khalid and Israr, were killed during Iftar in the jurisdiction of SITE Police Station in a firing incident by terrorists, a police statement said here on Saturday.

It said that the funeral prayers were attended by Provincial Minister Manzoor Wassan, Pakistan Rangers Sindh Director General Major General Muhammad Saeed, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) AD Khawaja, senior police officials and residents of the area.

A contingent of the police presented the ‘Shaheed Salam’. Floral wreaths were also laid.

On the occasion, the Sindh IGP offered condolences to the family members of the slain policemen.

He also paid tributes to the policemen who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

The IGP said that such cowardly acts of the terrorists cannot lower the morale of the police force. The sacrifices of the policemen would not go in vain.

He stated that the nefarious designs of the terrorists would be frustrated.

The IGP announced a sum of rupees five million each for the legal heirs of the slain policemen, monthly salary till attaining the age of retirement and other incentives as per the rules.

NEW GROUP INVOLVED IN KARACHI POLICEMEN KILLING, CLAIMS CTD:

Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Incharge Raja Umar on Saturday has warned of a surge in sectarian target killing after the recent incident of shooting that took lives of as many as four police officers in Karachi.

The officer said that the suspects, who were wearing helmets, attacked policemen in SITE area and also threw letter to spread fear. The investigation team also said that new terrorist organisation is likely to be involved in such kind of acts.

The CCTV footage has shown that four militants fired at police officers, identified as Muhammad Yousuf, Constable Shabbir, Constable Khalid and Constable Israr in the head and fled the scene. The forensic team and CTD Additional Inspector General Sanaullah Abbasi reached the spot and ordered to hold a proper investigation into the matter.

Raja Umar said that Ansar al-Shariah can be behind the attack. He said that the criminals used 9mm pistols and two motorcycles.

Meanwhile, the deputy inspector general (DIG) has suspended the station house officer (SHO), while Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and sought a report from the AIG, directing him to arrest the culprits as early as possible.
