Vermicelli, sweets sales surge ahead of Eid

ISLAMABAD: Eating vermicelli and sweets is an Eid tradition which is observed throughout the Muslim world.

In Pakistan, people of all ages look forward to consuming sweets during the Eid holidays and the sale of these items is on the rise across the country.

“I have bought 10 packs of vermicelli for Eid. I will send Eid gifts to my daughters including vermicelli as it is an old custom of our society,” said Amnah Hasan a buyer at a local grocery store.

“On every Eid, I prepare`sheer kKhorma’ for my family, relatives and friends. It’s cooking takes a long time so I cook it one day before Eid,” said another customer Naureen Zia.

The dishes made by vermicelli are liked by all age group due to their nutritional benefits and good taste.

Vermicelli manufacturers also increase the production to facilitate consumers during Ramzan and Eid days. Confectionary producers are expecting a boom in sales on Chaand Raat and the first two says of Eid.

A sweet shop salesman Azhar said: “On June 18 we had a good business due to the victory of Pakistan cricket team, and more rush at the sweetmeat shops is expected to increase during Eid holidays”.

“The prices of sweets, usually, remain the same on Eid-ul-Fitr with a minor difference from the past year. To avoid standing in queues for buying sweets, people placed their orders in advance” he added.

Health experts said unhealthy products could damage consumers’ health and people who kept fast throughout the month of Ramazan should avoid taking heavy food on Eid.
