Arrangements to cope with possible flood situations reviewed

LAHORE: Punjab Irrigation Secretary Captain (retd) Asadullah Khan has issued orders for field engineers to carry a detailed review of all canals, ahead of the monsoon season in order to secure irrigation infrastructure in case of a flood.

He was addressing a meeting in connection with flood management on Tuesday. He also said that water capacity can be increased through de-silting and elimination of encroachments settled in the way of river flows. Both of these are measures recommended by the Irrigation Department’s Safety Evaluation Cell, which was established to ensure the safety of canal system in the province.

He also directed chief engineers to personally monitor the work and has established a risk assessment unit in order to cope with any possible flood situation.
