ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Monday (today) adjourned the hearing of seeking disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and Secretary General Jehangir Tareen for an indefinite period.

A five-member commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Sardar Raza was hearing the petitions filed by PML-N’s Talal Chaudhry and Muhammad Khan Daha seeking the disqualification of Khan and Tareen on the grounds that the former had allegedly submitted false financial statements regarding purchase of his Bani Gala residence, whereas the latter was accused of alleged loan write-offs.

The bench ordered that the case will be heard once the Supreme Court announces its verdict in a similar case.

During the hearing, PTI’s legal counsel Naeem Bukhari argued that a similar case is being heard by the Supreme Court, saying the ECP should take its decision once the SC verdict is out.

On May 9, the ECP had restored the petition of Hashim Ali Bhutta seeking the disqualification of Imran Khan.

The petitioner, Bhutta, had said that Imran Khan did not mention his Bani Gala residence and London flats in his assets declaration before the ECP. The petition had also stated that the PTI chief failed to abide by articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

The ECP had earlier dismissed the petition because the petitioner had failed to appear at the hearing.
