The Sindh government will present the provincial budget for fiscal year 2011-12 in the first week of June, said Sindh Law and Tourism Minister Ayaz Soomro on Saturday.
He was speaking to journalists after presiding over a meeting of the government’s law officers working in Karachi at the Sindh Assembly building.
Soomro said the date for presenting the new budget has yet not been finalised.
However, according to official sources the tentative date for budget announcement is June 3.
The Sindh Assembly session is scheduled on Monday; however, another session would be called for presenting the new budget for new financial year.
Soomro said the Sindh chief minister would brief the provincial elected house on the performance of PPP-led government’s third year during the session.
Responding to a question, the provincial law minister said the government would also table some bills during the session including some pending bills.
When asked about the much-awaited legislation on new local government system, Soomro replied that negotiations are still continuing among the coalition partners on the subject but elections cannot be held in the province until some necessary legislation.
He maintained that no coalition party has created hindrances in the passage of local government system bill; however, every party has its own formula that is being discussed to bring a consensus.
The law and tourism minister said that the situation in the country especially law and order was also one of the factors behind the delay on such issues.
Responding to another question, Soomro said the government is engaged with the Sindh High Court (SHC) chief justice in discussing the issue of appointment of “Sindhi judges” to the SHC. The matter pertaining to shortage of judges in anti-terrorism courts is being addressed and 10 more judges would be appointed in a week, he added.
Although it is the prerogative of the provincial government, the SHC chief justice has also been consulted on the issue, said Soomro.
