Former foreign minister and senior PPP leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi has demanded President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani resign over their inability to protect the sovereignty of the country, while lashing out at the failure of the government and the intelligence agencies alike, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Nisar Ali Khan said security forces and agencies were blind to their duties. Talking to reporters at the Lahore Press Club on Saturday, Qureshi called the unilateral US operation in Abbottabad an aggression and demanded a thorough inquiry into the issue. He also proposed to entrust the headship of the inquiry to the Parliamentary Committee on National Security. Qureshi said action must also be taken against the ISI director general, if he was found incautious in the matter.Urging the president and the prime minister to act like the true heads of state, Qureshi said it was time to save the country, not the office and both should inform the nation about the facts. He lamented that president had no time to address the nation.
Meanwhile, the opposition leader in the NA also raised the demand of President Zardari’s resignation. He categorically said if the president could not speak the truth, he must resign.
“The operation tramples on our honour and dignity, and the president and prime minister must either give an explanation or resign,” Nisar said.“The government is keeping silent and there appears to be nobody to respond to propaganda against Pakistan,” he added, saying that people in the country were feeling “insecure” after the covert US mission.
Calling it “the biggest tragedy”, Nisar again demanded the government share details of the Abbottabad operation with the nation.
He said the opposition would announce their next strategy on Tuesday if Gilani did not answer questions about the incident in parliament.
Nisar said, “The security forces and agencies should not have adopted dual policies”. In reality, the duo is blind to its duties,” he said.
