Election Commission of Pakistan Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmad told the National Assembly (NA) Special Committee on Law And Justice on Friday that the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) had struck the names of 37 million voters from the 2007 electoral rolls because of unavailability of records. Ahmad said according to the 2007 electoral rolls, the number of voters stood at 81 million, but NADRA had no records and data of 37 million voters when the rolls were scrutinized, therefore their names were deleted.
Thirty-seven million names are being included in the new voter lists for the next general election as all these people have obtained CNICs. Following the inclusion of these names in the lists, the number of voters has reached over 80 million. “Despite this fact, we will conduct door-to-door checking in July and CNIC of every voter will be checked,” Ahmad said.
