A traffic police constable shot dead a “mentally ill” man near a police station in Mardan on Tuesday.
The man was later identified as Bilal. According to DSP Aitzaz Khan, the constable alleged that the deceased ran frantically towards him and pushed him down to the ground. The constable saw the man as a threat to the police station and opened fire, killing him on the spot.
The DSP added that the constable named Saeed had been arrested and a case had been registered against him.
The deceased family said that Bilal,20, was mentally unstable and was being taken to a doctor for a checkup by his father when he ran away.
This is not the first of its kind case as just two months ago another such incident happened when the police shot and killed a vendor named Olas within the jurisdiction of the Mardan city police station.
Olas used to sell clothes on a bicycle and was doing the same when he accidentally entered the Red Zone where the courts are present. Later, it was confirmed Olas was innocent as no criminal record was found against him.
