The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) on Monday revealed it had taken action against groups in Sindh involved in the leaking of Intermediate examination papers through WhatsApp groups.

Despite the police’s efforts, however, another Intermediate exam was leaked to students today at 9:35 am — although a WhatsApp group was not utilised for the leaks in that instance, a CTD official told a private news channel.

CTD Senior Superintendent Police Naveed Khawaja confirmed that 15 WhatsApp groups had been identified as being active in the leaking of Intermediate examination papers.

CTD DIG Amir Farooqui said his department had received information on groups leaking exam papers, based on which raids were conducted in Karachi, Hyderabad and Mithi. No arrests were made during the raids, he said, and cell phone numbers which were being used to carry out the illegal activities were found shut.

Farooqui added that two people from India’s Rajasthan and Gujarat were allegedly linked to the racket. The contact in Gujarat was traced over Facebook, he said, and both individuals are believed to have links to an official in Mithi’s Education Department.

Former officials of the Karachi board are also suspected of involvement in the racket and have been identified as being a part of unfair practices, the DIG CTD said.
