On the occasion of Earth Day 2017, the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) organised an awareness seminar and theatre in Arts Council of Pakistan here on Saturday.

Sindh Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Secretary Zameer Ahmed Khan was the chief guest.

A large number of people from all walks of life, including environmental activists, environmentalists, students, artists, civil society members, government servants and corporate leaders attended the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, environment secretary Zameer said that in addition to the enhancement of environmental awareness, practical measures to protect the ever-degrading environment are crucial.

He said small steps lead towards a big success so people should take care of their surrounding environment by avoiding all those acts that may pollute the air, water and land environment of the country.

He said, “Earth Day actually inculcates in us that planet earth is the only livable planet in the universe, therefore, we don’t have any choice if it becomes unlivable by unending acts of polluting the world.”

In his welcome address, SEPA Additional Director General SM Yahya said that one of the main objectives of SEPA is to organise environmental awareness activities in order to make people play their role for the improvement of their local environment.

He said on the occasion of Earth Day, SEPA organises different programmes to let people know how the environment is being degraded and how, collectively, everyone can play a role in protecting it.

Delivering his speech on this occasion, renowned environmentalist Shahid Lutfi said, “There is an utmost need to go for sustainable development for our safe future and the future of our coming generations.”

Stage drama director and writer Naheed Waheed, along with her team, presented a stage drama.

It may be mentioned here that every year Earth Day is observed all around the world on April 22 to revive the pledge of mankind to keep the planet earth safe from the menace of pollution. This year the theme of Earth Day is ‘Environmental and Climate Literacy’.
