Scorching heat paralyses civic activities in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The scorching heat with low humidity has paralysed the civic activities in Hyderabad city as the doctors have advised the citizens to adopt precautionary arrangements to save themselves from heat strokes.

On Tuesday, the officials of Meteorological Department have recorded maximum temperature 42 degree Celsius with 8 percent humidity while the minimum temperature was 23.5 degree Celsius in the early morning.

As a result of sizzling heat, the citizens are experiencing great difficulties to carry out their routine work as well as jobs in industrial units, public and private offices particularly the educational institutions.

The unscheduled load shedding from the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company is also testing the temperament of the citizens besides, the non-availability of water for daily use in various localities of Hyderabad, Latifabad, and Qasimabad.

Earlier, Hyderabad Commissioner Muhammad Sohail Rajput held a meeting to review the impact of recent heat wave expressed satisfaction over the arrangements adopted by the concerned departments to counter the heat.

The commissioner directed the concerned departments to ensure acquiring of timely information from the Meteorological Department so that the citizens could be guided to adopt precautionary measures well in advance.

He also directed the availability of standby generators, ambulances, ice bricks, and necessary medicines including ORS in sufficient quantity in heat stroke centres and the hospitals, while banners should also be displayed at the premises of all hospitals and prominent places of Hyderabad guiding the citizens to adopt precautionary measures against heat strokes.

Liaquat University Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Abdul Wahab informed the meeting that separate six-bedded heat stroke wards have already been set up both at Hyderabad and Jamshoro hospitals while Dr Abdul Aziz Thebo has been appointed the focal person on heat stroke issues to coordinate with the medical and paramedical staff in case of emergency.

A task has also been given to lady health workers to launch an awareness campaign in this regard.

Meanwhile, the entire city of Larkana and its surroundings remained under the grip of severe heat forcing the majority of people to remain in their homes.

The Met Office Larkana recorded 43 Degree Celsius as maximum temperature.

The severe heat has badly affected the daily activities on one hand and on the other, the prices of ice and cold drinks have soared tremendously. Due to hot weather, the cases of sun-strike, sunburn, etc were reported in many public and private hospitals for treatment.

Besides the sizzling heat, the frequent power breakdowns, particularly around the mid-day, also tested the endurance of the people.

Meanwhile, the District Health Department has distributed handbills bearing suggestion for the people to avoid sunstroke and other heat-related complications. The people were advised: To use water and other liquids frequently, increased use of lemon mixed water, and use of glucose.

The Chandka Medical College Hospital medical superintendent has also notified that special arrangements have been made for the treatment of sunstroke, sunburn, prickly heat and hypertension patients.
