ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui Wednesday said Facebook could be shut in Pakistan if the management of the social media platform does not act on the country’s request.

Hearing a case against blasphemous content on social media, Justice Siddqiui said the court might order the government to conduct a referendum to elicit public opinion if they wanted social media or not.

The court ordered to form a joint investigation team to probe the issue of blasphemous content on social media.

Appearing before the court, Interior Secretary Arif Khan said the case made progress as some people had been arrested.

Also, a Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) official submitted before the court that two to three more arrests were likely to be made today (Wednesday).

Several leaders hailing from religious parties also attended the hearing.

Justice Siddiqui said the court would decide on the next hearing whether or not the social media was required in the country.
