KARACHI: Sprinter Nadia Nazeer and her five-year-old son were killed in a road accident in Punjab’s Bahawalnagar district on Saturday, a private news channel reported.
Nadia was heading back to Sahiwal from a wedding ceremony with her husband and son when their car was hit by a speeding trailer at the Chishtian Road near Ada Amin Kot.
The accident left Nadia and her son dead, while her husband was injured and shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Nadia, from Punjab’s Sahiwal, holds the distinction of winning five bronze medals in internation400-metretre sprints.
Belonging from the neighbourhood of Fareed Ganj, Nadia was associated with Pakistan Wapda.
In the year 2007, Nadia made a national record by jumping 10 obstacles in 1:10 minutes in a national competition in Karachi. She broke her own record a year later in 2008.
In 2011, the athlete tied the knot in Bahawalnagar, however, her married life failed to diminish her passion for the sport.
After her marriage, she participated in a national competition in 2013, where she stood first in the 100-metre sprint and was awarded best player in football. She had also been playing for Wapda since 2002.
Nadia had the honour of being a national champion four times.
