The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday rejected disqualification references against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Imran Khan and Jahangir Tareen.

The two references were sent by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq seeking disqualification of Khan and Tareen.

Talking to the media, PTI Spokesperson Naeemul Haque said, “Following ECP’s ruling, NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq should be disqualified. The speaker’s reference was based on malafide intentions. Following the commission’s decision, PTI has decided to launch a protest against Sadiq.”

Last month, some PML-N lawmakers submitted two references against PTI chief and the party’s secretary-general to the NA speaker after PTI filed references against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his disqualification. Rejecting PTI references against the prime minister, the speaker sent references against PTI leaders to the ECP.
