Taseer calls to join flood relief campaign

Punjab Governor Salman Taseer invited political workers from all political parties to join the Suraj Campaign to reconstruct houses in flood-hit areas, while addressing the press on Friday after a meeting with the vice chancellors and rectors of 42 private and public sector universities of Punjab and representatives from Chambers of Commerce.
He told the journalists that the meeting aimed at mobilizing the educational institutions to play their role in Suraj Campaign. He said that he wanted to involve the youth of Pakistan in the national cause. He said he had asked the universities to submit their proposals, within next 48 hours, for the reconstruction of houses in the flood-hit areas of South Punjab.
He said that a three member committee had been formed to prepare and monitor the strategy for the reconstruction of houses. He said that University of Engineering and Technology Vice Chancellor Muhammad Akram has been appointed as the chairman of Suraj Campaign. Governor said that the VC had contributed Rs 5 million for the movement.
He said that fifty houses and two mosques had been reconstructed under this movement in Hajipura and Nawabpura near Multan and he would inaugurate these houses next week. He said that Rs 50,000 per house was required for reconstruction.
He said that flood had damaged the Pakistan’s economy and he was approaching businessmen, industrialists and traders to help him rehabilitate flood victims. Taseer said, “We have accelerated the reconstruction so that the affected could resettle before winter.”
He said that University of Veterinary and Health Sciences and Agriculture University Faisalabad had assured of their assistance in the treatment of the cattle related diseases and provision of seeds and pesticides in the flood-hit areas.
He added that the flood relief campaign was transparent and a website recording funds generation and rehabilitation works would be launched shortly.
