Corruption allegations : Mohammad Irfan and 3 others questioned by PCB

DUBAI: Pakistan’s left-arm fast-bowler Mohammad Irfan on Saturday was questioned by the PCB as part of an investigation into an attempt to corrupt the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Irfan is is among three players from the league being questioned regarding the corruption allegations. On Friday night, Irfan’s Islamabad United teammates Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif were suspended over spot-fixing allegations.

PSl chairman Najam Sethi revealed the new names in a tweet saying the mencae of corruption would not be allowed to enter the PSL. Earlier it had been reported that the left-arm pace bowler had been suspended and sent back to Pakistan, like his teammates Sharjeel and Latif had exited. The PSL chairman, however, clarified that Irfan was being questioned and an inquiry was ongoinjg, but he had not yet been suspended.

It was also learned that Karachi Kings player Shahzaib Hassan had also been questioned along with Quetta Gladiator’s left arm orthodox bowler Zulfiqar Babur.

Sources also reported that a total of six players were involved in the scandal including players from franchises such as Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators were being investigated by the management.

“Three to four more players from Qalandars and Gladiators are also under the radar and their names will be announced once investigation is completed,” said source.

Najam Sethi in a statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was adamant that the investigation is a clear example of the board’s commitment to drive corruption out of the sport.

“It would not be appropriate to comment on the specifics of this case,” said Sethi. “However, this investigation is a clear demonstration of our determination to drive corruption out of our sport.”

“We will not tolerate any form of corrupt activity and as this investigation proceeds we will not hesitate to take further decisive action as appropriate. The investigation of the PCB Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is backed by the ICC ACU, who has been effective in dealing with this case to date and we will continue to work in the closest collaboration as the investigation proceeds.”
