‘Eradication of corruption a collective responsibility’: NAB chairman

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry said that the NAB has chalked out a comprehensive Anti-Corruption Strategy focusing on enforcement, awareness and preventive measures to get the country rid of corruption.

According to a press release issued on Sunday, the NAB chairman said that eradication of corruption is a collective responsibility and the NAB believes in “Zero corruption, 100% Development”.

The chairman said that the NAB has established Forensic Science Lab (FSL) in NAB (Rawalpindi) and rationalise its workload, and timelines have been prescribed for the efficient, effective and expeditious disposal of cases.

Zaman further said that the NAB has introduced a new system of the Combine Investigation Team (CIT) in order to benefit from the experience and collective wisdom of senior supervisory officers, a system of the CIT comprised of the director, additional director, investigation officer and a senior legal counsel has been put in place. “This is not only improving the quality to the work but ensuring that no single individual can influence the proceedings”.

The NAB chairman said that the bureau has established more than 42 thousand Character Building Societies (CBS) in Universities/Colleges to spread awareness about the ill effects of corruption.

Zaman said that the comparative figures for the latest two and half years were indicative of the hard work put in by the NAB, and there has been an increase in the number of complaints which reflected enhanced public trust in the bureau. The PILDAT report showed that 42% people trusted the NAB against 30 % for the police and 29 % for the government officials, he added.

Zaman said that Pakistan has become a role model for the SAARC countries in eradication of corruption, and the World Economic Forum and Mishal Pakistan according to Global Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum rated Pakistan from 126 to 122.

The NAB has developed an effective Monitoring and Evaluation System (MES) catering the needs of all the concerned having salient features of the maintenance of data at each stage including complaint entry, complaint verification, inquiry, investigation, prosecution stage and record preservation of the regional board meetings and executive board meetings, he concluded.
