The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing cases of 2002 communal riots in Indian Gujarat has submitted its final report to the Supreme Court of India ahead of its scheduled hearing on April 27. The report was submitted by Dr RK Raghavan, former director CBI, who was entrusted the task of supervising investigations on the role of state’s chief minister Narendra Modi and complicity of the state machinery in fomenting the riots that claimed 1200 lives in the state, a private news channel reported.
The Apex Court had asked the SIT to examine a complaint of Zakia Jaffri, whose husband late MP Ehsan Jaffri was among 69 people killed by a mob in Gulberg society massacre on February 28, 2002. In her complaint, Jaffri’s widow has alleged that Chief Minister and 61 other persons had conspired to organise anti minority riots in the state following the Godhara train burning incident.
Meanwhile, Dr RK Raghavan has refused to comment on the allegations made against the SIT and its chairman by Gujarat’s Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjiv Bhatt, who filed an affidavit before the Apex Court on April 14. When contacted by HT, Raghavan categorically refused to offer any comment saying, “I cannot comment on the issue.
I will submit the SIT’s report to the Apex Court and everything will be mentioned in it.” However, asked on allegation that he has compromised the investigation given by the court, he said, “I will tell the court everything,” is what he said, refusing to be drawn into the allegations Bhatt has made.
