Former president Pervez Musharraf claimed on Monday that former army chief Gen (r) Raheel Sharif influenced the government to end legal cases against him.

“The government was influenced by the army to end cases against me. The judiciary was influenced by the government to have the cases ‘move’ in my favour,” Musharraf claimed during an interview to a private news channel.

The statement comes weeks after General (r) Raheel Sharif was replaced after completing his three-year tenure.

Earlier in October, Musharraf had claimed that the military had helped him leave the country.

In an interview with The Atlantic in Washington DC, Musharraf had said that Pakistani social fabric was not made for democracy.

“Reasonably fair,” he replied when Robert Siegel, the interviewer asked him: “You are an army guy; the army looked after you. You were able to leave despite the government’s efforts to keep you there, fair (assumption)?”

“Army has always had a role since our independence (on August 14, 1947). Army has played a prominent role in the governance of Pakistan, partially, because, or mainly because of misgovernance by all of the so-called democratically elected governments,” he had said.

  1. Former president has a point regarding Democracy in Pakistan but he can't blame the politicians all the time! Every civilian Govt. in a newly independent country needs time to mature but pakistanis never got that.. Since the birth of the nation the Army has taken over the role of being the protector of the territorial security of Pakistan and it's ideologigical Security.Cosidering that at birth Pakistan had only one major general, two birgadiers and six colonels the Power the army has accumulated both politically and militaraly is mind boggling. It is not the politicians but the army which has lead to the destruction of Pakistan. Military mind cannot wear two Crowns at the same time!
As far as the case of Ex President is concerned it was first the former COAS Kayani who tried to get him off the hook. A deal was in place With PM Nawaz that Musharraf would be allowed to leave Pakistan on humanitaian grounds to visit his ailing mother in Dubai and would then to proceed to London for "Medical treatment" never to Return. The PM at the last moment refused to go along. He wanted Musharraf to face the courts as he had faced. Later on it is quite right COAS Raheel saved Musharraf's bacon. In conclusion the territorial and ideological Security of Pakistan is a civilian responsibilty and not of Army.

  2. It is rightly said that the biggest point against democracy is a 5 minute discussion with a democrat. As above doctor has made it clear. No matter what you do to convince an ordinary Pakistani of wonders done by democrats like Bhutto, BB and Zardari, they'd still be convinced that its the Army that led to destruction of Pakistan. Could we say that democrats moved to construct Pakistan? We witnessed both civilian Govt. and Iftikhar Chaudry's Supreme Court moving together to destroy Pakistan's core, yet today Army is blamed for all ills. Do we see any uplift in last 10 years? Yes, its been almost ten years since Army has been minding its own business and politicians are eating up our country.

    • Dear Zahid,
I really admire Your comment. The first sentence is a quote from Winston Churchill.! As a student i also used to admire Bhutto as a democrate but he turned out to be a demogogue. i must admit i don't have much appreciation of the two others you mentioned. I have just finished Reading a book "faith, unity &discipline"–the ISI of Pakistan. It is worthy to be read by a man of Your intellect. The book opened my mind too–perhaps you will forgive me too.Every time Pakistan has gone to war who may i ask was in charge?
