After launching expensive safe city project, Islamabad police was only able to nab 1,641 criminals, however in 2015, police nabbed 8,256 criminals.
The criminals were involved in murder, car theft, and burglary incidents. Police has also recovered the valuables of 362.8 million in 10 months.
Islamabad Police failed to launch massive crackdown against absconders, criminal elements and search operations against the suspects.
According to a police spokesman, the performance of all police stations remained satisfactory and crime rate also declined in this year. A total of 488 criminals of 184 gangs were nabbed while 3507 absconders were also arrested.
During the current year, 157 persons were nabbed for their alleged involvement in murder cases while 57 alleged killers were apprehended for being involved in 23 blind murder cases. In total, 513 robbers involved in 285 cases were arrested, besides recovery of looted items worth more than Rs.55.3 million. 793 accused of burglary involved in 499 cases were nabbed and police recovered valuables worth Rs 93.4 million from them.
During the period, 196 car thieves and snatchers were caught and 115 vehicles and 68 motorbikes were recovered from them. A total of 90 tempered vehicles were also recovered, while 2766 proclaimed offenders and 761 courts absconders were caught as well.
However in 2015, the police arrested 8,256 accused for their alleged involvement in various crimes, besides recovery of cache of weapons, narcotics and looted items worth around Rs 408 million from them.
According to a police statement, crime rate significantly reduced in 2015. It said a total of 113 murder cases were reported in 2015 as compared to 151 in 2014. According to this statement, seven kidnapping incidents, 31 robberies, 324 street crime cases, 300 burglary cases, 354 theft cases and 261 bike theft cases were reported in 2015 as compared to 14 kidnapping cases, 57 robberies, 522 street crime cases, 358 burglary cases, 428 theft cases and 442 motorbike theft cases were reported in the year 2014.
The car theft cases also reduced significantly and 51 per cent reduction was witnessed in such cases. Around 369 cases of vehicle theft were reported in 2015 and 767 in 2014.
During this period, 943 proclaimed offenders were arrested and 5,084 cases were also disposed off.
The installation of substandard close circuit cameras and the increasing rate of crime in the federal capital Islamabad have thwarted the Islamabad Safe City Project, which has cost billions of rupees and due to which the interior ministry is perplexed. The first-of-its-kind project has a price tag of Rs126 million.
Nearly 1,800 surveillance cameras have been installed across the federal capital as part of the project, whose command and control centre in a bombproof building at H-11 will monitor important buildings, entry and exit points, roads, commercial centres and a sizable portion of the city’s residential areas.
The system after screening the suspects sends a report to the command and control centre. After that the Rapid Response Force (RRF) reaches the pointed area within three minutes.
By virtue of the non operational safe city project, the crime rate in the capital is on rise day after day. The interior ministry was told that the police posts situated adjacent to these gadgets do not come under coverage of these cameras.
Public Relation Officer of Islamabad Police told Pakistan Today that safe city project is helpful for tracing criminals. He claimed that the CCTV cameras do not just record but they also take the pictures of the driver of vehicle and number plates. CCTV cameras are covering every entry, exit and corner of the city.
