Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday said cooperation between legal fraternities of India and Pakistan would help evolve understanding and lead to increased trade between the two countries for the economic benefit of the people living in the region.
He was talking to a four-member delegation headed by Ram Jeth Malani, president of the Indian Supreme Court Bar Association. The delegation had come to Pakistan to attend the National Judicial Conference.
Issues pertaining to the interest of legal and judicial fraternities of the two countries came under discussion in the meeting and the Indian delegation proposed increased cooperation and interaction between the members of the bench and bars of the two countries. The chief justice said judicial activism for the release of fishermen and other prisoners who had completed their sentences was appreciated for being in accord with fundamental rights as guaranteed by the constitutions of the two countries.
CJ opens Supreme Court Museum: The Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Saturday, on the second day of the National Judicial Conference, inaugurated the Supreme Court Museum at Islamabad. The judges from the Supreme Court, Federal Shariat Court and all the high courts were present on the occasion. Also among the audience were senior and delegates from India.
The museum aims at preserving and protecting the judicial history of the country and the evolution of the apex court through the years.
Talking on the occasion the chief justice said that it was Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani who came up with the idea of setting up of a museum and that he was glad to have him present at the opening ceremony.
Presently the museum houses a car once in the use by Justice A R Cornelius, former Chief Justice of Pakistan. The vehicle was donated by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja.
The legal fraternity and public have been requested to providing any historic artefacts suitable for museum.
