Stressing the need for capacity building of journalists, speakers at a training workshop urged media houses, as well as the government, to develop a mechanism to train and equip media persons in accordance with the modern needs.
In this regard, they urged media houses and the government to take effective measures for improving ethical standards of journalism in Pakistan and capacity building of media persons.
They expressed these views while speaking at a boot training workshop organised by Individualland (IL) Pakistan.
IL Pakistan has also organised such training workshops in Lahore, Peshawar and Karachi aimed at equipping journalists with basic techniques and educating about modern needs.
They said that journalists, especially young reporters, must be made aware of the basic ethics and provided with adequate training enabling them to take decisions that ensure credibility.
Media persons should be equipped with basic techniques; how to gather and present news, how to cover disasters, how to conduct an interview, how to write business stories and so on and so forth, they said.
About capacity building, they said that media houses, along with the government, need to develop a mechanism for training media persons in order to improve capacity of working journalists, and pay them reasonable salaries to ensure better standard of reporting.
The participants were greatly impressed by the training; they said that the training workshop was a fabulous experience, as it helped them understanding the concepts which are needed for modern day journalism, including development journalism and ethics of journalism.
Besides, they said that the training had given them awareness pertaining to the thematic areas which are important and essential for modern day journalism.
Nasir Hussain and Fazal-ur-Rehman of IL Pakistan moderated the boot training workshop.
Individualland Pakistan conducted training of trainers (TOT) on four thematic areas: development journalism, conflict sensitive journalism, gender sensitive reporting, and democracy and governance.
