A court in Islamabad on Friday issued notice to Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif to submit his response in a case of Rs.30 billion defamation suit against him filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Secretary General Jahangir Tareen.

District and Sessions Judge Kamran Bisharat Mufti heard the defamation suit.

Tareen’s counsel contended that Shahbaz Sharif had levelled baseless allegations regarding writing off bank loan against his client.

“Shahbaz Sharif was served a court notice, but instead of seeking apology, he repeated his accusations,” the lawyer said.

After hearing his arguments, the judge issued notice to the PML-N senior leader to file his reply by Nov 12.

Tareen, in the suit, had accused Shahbaz Sharif of making “false allegations” over the plaintiff had had loans written off from banks and usurped public funds. The chief minister, according to the plaintiff, made these statements at a public gathering in Rajanpur on April 25.
