Lt Colonel Shahid died after falling into a ditch on the Rawalpindi-Peshawar Motorway, according to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). Another officer who fell with him, Major Jalal, received serious injuries from the fall.
According to ISPR, Lt Col Shahid and Maj Jalal were en route from Rawalpindi to Nowshera in a military convoy, but since routes were blocked with containers, they got down from their vehicles and went on foot to find an alternate route for the convoy.
In the dark of the night, the statement continues, both officers fell off the edge of the road into a ditch along the motorway near Hazro.
Shahid died on the spot while Jalal sustained serious injuries.
PTI Leader Jahangir Tareen expressed his grief over the passing of the two officers, and said the government bore the responsibility for their deaths, due to its decision of disrupting traffic flow on the motorway by placing containers.
He posted a tweet saying: “Saddened to hear about the tragic death of Colonel Shahid due to blockage of GT Road. Responsible authorities should be made answerable asap”.
