The 820km Pakistan-China fibre optic cable project from Rawalpindi to Khunjerab will be completed at a cost of $44 million by June 2018.

After completion under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the project will convert the trade corridor into the digital corridor.

The project was being completed through collaboration between China’s Huawei and Special Communication Organisation (SCO), according to SCO Senior Project Manager Muhammad Adil.

This project would not only generate revenue but it would also provide the safest route of voice traffic between the two countries, he added.

The foundation stone of the fibre optic cable project was laid in May this year. A project to expand the fibre cable up to Gwadar is in the final phase of approval which will provide international linkage along the entire CPEC route.
