Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari felicitated the elected mayors and chairmen who took oath of their offices across the Sindh province on Tuesday.
“Today begins a new era in the history of local governance. Those taking over the rein of local governments as elected representatives have chosen great responsibilities to serve citizens of their respective areas. From cleanliness to provision of civic amenities at the door-steps of people, your performance should be more visible than in verbal form,” the PPP chairman stated in his congratulation message to more than 200 mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen and vice chairmen of the local bodies who were sworn in simultaneously all over the province at public ceremonies.
Bilawal said that the Sindh province had achieved a local government system through party-based elections for the first time in decades. Besides the civic amenities, the new local bodies shall also act as nurseries of grass-root democracy to strengthen the democratic order with full public participation, he added.
He eulogised the committed hard-work and untiring efforts of former chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and MNA Faryal Talpur, President PPP Women Wing, in the local government elections where the PPP swept all over the province winning the chairmanships of all the district councils in the province and massive victories in other committees.
Bilawal said he was happy to see that 18 candidates from the minority communities had also been elected as chairmen and vice chairmen on PPP tickets which adds another feather in the cap of local governments and democracy. The PPP chairman asked the newly-elected local bodies heads to serve the people with dedication and devotion to create an image of local governance which is replicated and followed by their counterparts in other provinces.
