The Baldia factory fire affectees held a protest on Thursday against non-payment of compensation to the victims’ families.

The demonstration was jointly organised by the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF) and Ali Enterprises Fire Affectees Association (AEFAA) outside the Karachi Press Club.

A large number of victim families and others attended the protest.

AEFAA President Jabir Khan, who lost his 22-year-old son in the fire incident, in his address said that four years have passed but the victims have not been given justice nor the promises made to them have been materialised. “A number of times, we, the affectees, have tried to remind Nawaz Sharif of his promise through press conferences and demonstrations but in vain. The promise is still limited to words only,” he commented.

NTUF President Rafiq Baloch, NTUF Deputy General Secretary Nasir Mansoor, AEFAA Senior Vice-President Saeeda Khatoon, who lost her teenage son in the incident, and Home-Based Women Workers Federation General Secretary Zahra Khan also spoke.

The protesters urged that PM Nawaz should fulfill his promise and provide compensation of Rs 3,00,000 to each of the victims’ families. They also demanded that the pension from the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution should be made for lifetime.
