PM directs to expedite work on Neelum-Jhelum Power Project

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that efforts are being made to end the load-shedding during tenure of the current government.

He was speaking during his visit to Neelum-Jhelum hydro-power project’s site on Friday. The project will produce 969 MW through its four turbines of 242.25 MW each.

The prime minister said he is fully resolved to fulfill commitments made to the nation and will not tolerate any hurdles in this regard.

He gave directions for timely completion of the project. He said difficulties being faced in its implementation should have been anticipated in advance.

Responding to a demand by the prime minister of Azad Kashmir, he gave directions to give priority to the local people for jobs in the project after its completion.

The chief executive officer of the project informed the prime minister that 78 per cent of jobs have been given to the local people.

Giving a briefing on the occasion, the WAPDA chairman said 85.3 per cent work on Neelum-Jhelum project has been completed.

Construction of tunnels is in the final stages and half of the steel lining of the tunnels has been completed. Dam structure and spillway work is 100 per cent complete.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, Minister for Kashmir Affairs Ch Barjees Tahir, AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider and Special Assistant to PM Dr Asif Kirmani accompanied the prime minister during the visit.
