Almaz Ayana was elated after her stunning performance saw her obliterate the 10,000 metre world record on the opening day of athletics at Rio 2016.
The Ethiopian claimed the first track and field gold of the Games, and in some style.
Ayana crossed the line in 29:17.45, taking more than 14 seconds off the previous best mark, set by China’s Wang Junxia 23 years ago.
“This means everything for me. God is the one that got me here. It’s a huge deal for me,” she said.
“Getting to this point is a dream come true. I never thought that this would happen and I’m so in awe. I’m very happy to get here.
“I have worked very hard. I wouldn’t say that my recent training has been any different from before but it was hard and it was all worth it.”
