In order to ensure environmental and road safety, the Punjab government recently inaugurated the first-ever Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS) of the country at Kala Shah Kaku. The underlying purpose of the project is to inspect all the vehicles in compliance to the international standards and specifications of vehicle testing in a uniform manner. Moreover, the plan to make the fitness certificate a must for getting route permits for public transport is also on the cards. The move will certainly help avert road accidents which are caused by vehicles not fit for roads, annually claiming thousands of lives in the province.

Under VICS, a total of 39 stations will be set up in the province by the end of next year whereas three centers will be established in Lahore. It is pertinent to mention here that this latest system has been introduced with the cooperation of a prominent Swedish company. Since the chronicle increase in vehicular pollution has enwreathed the road networks all across the province therefore, the initiative taken by the government is certainly big not in terms of cost or size but with regard to preservation of environment and road safety and certainly deserves praise and acknowledgement. It is hoped that the government will remain sincere in its efforts to preserve not only the environment but also lives of the people.
