  • PTI leadership says all set for Aug 7 rally; Qadri announces countrywide campaign against Model Town tragedy on Aug 6
  • PTI to hold weekly protests in major cities; Protests to continue ‘till acceptance of opposition parties’ TORs to probe Panama Papers

The much awaited anti-corruption campaign of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) which starts on August 7 will be preceded by Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT)’s countrywide campaign against the Model Town tragedy on August 6, PAT Chairman Tahirul Qadri announced on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in a meeting held to review preparations for the August 7 rally, PTI Chairman Imran Khan said that PTI is the only beacon of hope for the people of the country.

In a further sign that the PTI and PAT, which held simultaneous sit-ins in Islamabad in 2014, were once again looking to coordinate their campaigns, the PAT chief announced his protest rally a day ahead of PTI’s.

Talking to media personnel on Sunday, Qadri said the protest campaign will continue till the heirs of 14 victims of the Model Town tragedy are given justice. He said that a few-hour long sit-in will be staged during the campaign.

Meanwhile, the PTI’s protest movement against the Panama Leaks will feature a rally from Peshawar to Rawalpindi on August 7 led by Imran Khan.

Speaking at the PTI high level meeting presided over by himself on Sunday, Imran Khan said that Pakistan is passing through a critical phase of its history and only PTI can provide hope to the party.

The top PTI leadership including Secretary General Jahangir Khan Tareen, Secretary Information Naeemul Haq, Saifullah Niazi, Asad Umer, Dr Shireen Mazari and Chaudhry Sarwar along with others was present on the occasion.

During the meeting, the leadership reviewed the preparations for the August 7 rally.

The PTI announced that there will be weekly protests, which would be held in the major cities of the country.

PTI quarters say protest rallies will continue until the government accepts the opposition parties’ Terms of Reference (TORs) to probe the Panama Leaks.

Imran Khan said that people of Turkey were on the forefront to foil the attempt to topple the democratically elected government, while in Pakistan the crooked and the corrupt politicians are the major threat to democracy.

He said that Pakistan is at the crossroad and people of the country have to decide whether they are satisfied with the corrupt ruling elites or if they want a strong and stable democratic system in the country.

The PTI chairman went on to say that people from Khyber to Karachi will be motivated and prepared during the movement so that the premier can be forced to accept the supremacy of law.

‘STAND UP TO CORRUPTION’:

Talking to media personnel, Naeemul Haq said that the PTI will launch its anti-corruption movement from Peshawar to Rawalpindi.

He said that the purpose of the protest rallies is to sensitise the people about corruption in the country and to build pressure on the government to hold the prime minister and his family accountable on Panama Papers leaks.

He said that during the meeting of the party leadership, matters relating to party’s reorganization, especially in KP and Sindh, were also discussed in detail.

Moreover, he said that the leadership discussed the political situation in the country along with the constitutional and legal aspects of the mass movement and its modus operandi.

‘WILL USE ALL AVAILABLE OPTIONS FOR JUSTICE’:

Naeemul Haq said that the party will use all available options for justice, as the Election Commission of Pakistan is also set to hear a PTI petition against the prime minister on August 5, while the party is also considering filing a petition in the Supreme Court against the premier prepared by Naeem Bukhari.

He said the PTI will hammer out its future course of action after seeing the government’s reaction.

He alleged that the government is using all possible tactics to hide its corruption, and urged people to stand up against it.

Talking about intra-party polls, he said that elections have been postponed and the new party organisers for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh will soon be announced.

The PTI leader said that the party will attend the TORs Committee meeting summoned by the government on August 5.

He rejected reports of any differences between Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Jahangir Khan Tareen.

Condemning the ongoing atrocities unleashed by Indian forces in Kashmir, he said that the international community should take notice of it and should force India to give them their right to self-determination.

AML CHIEF JUMPS ON THE BANDWAGON:

Meanwhile, Awami Muslim League (AML) Chief Sheikh Rasheed, who was part of PTI’s Sunday meeting, has also decided to join Imran Khan’s protest campaign against corruption. It may be mentioned here that the AML chief has always supported Imran Khan’s protest calls.
